What is Heliodor?

Heliodor originates from the beryl family of gems, and it occurs in yellow - to pale-yellow, deep-orange, orange-yellow, and greenish-yellow colours. It is a stone that can do pretty well when turned into jewellery; you can tell by its unique, beautiful colours.

One hard truth about heliodor stone is that it is not expensive until it is 10+ carats and with good clarity and a good hue. It acquired its name from Namibia as a trading name. It was first discovered in Namibia at Rossing, Erongo, in 1910. 

Notably, many gem collectors were confused and still confuse the stone with other same-looking beryl, but it was distinguished by a Roman historian Pliny, the Elder.

Is There a Difference Between Heliodor and Golden Beryl?

In other words, heliodor is sometimes called golden beryl, but "heliodor" in gemology is used when referring to beryl with a strict greenish-yellow colour. 

In contrast, "golden beryl" is used on beryl stones with vivid yellow to gold colours. There have been further rejections from Walter Schumann, who claims heliodors are golden beryl, which is weak-coloured, rather than the stones being separate from beryl combined.

Aquamarines can also be turned into heliodors by irradiation treatment. It is a vice-verser process that increases the value of the stones. Radiation of pale aquamarines can turn them into natural-looking heliodors. So yeah, they can be heat treated or even oiled for more different looks.

Where are Heliodors Found?

Heliodor stones are specifically found: in Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. Good quality colours come from Maine and New Hampshire in the US.
