What is Heliodor?

Heliodor originates from the beryl family of gems, and it occurs in yellow - to pale-yellow, deep-orange, orange-yellow, and greenish-yellow colours. It is a stone that can do pretty well when turned into jewellery; you can tell by its unique, beautiful colours.

One hard truth about heliodor stone is that it is not expensive until it is 10+ carats and with good clarity and a good hue. It acquired its name from Namibia as a trading name. It was first discovered in Namibia at Rossing, Erongo, in 1910.

Notably, many gem collectors were confused and still confuse the stone with other same-looking beryl, but it was distinguished by a Roman historian Pliny, the Elder.

Is There a Difference Between Heliodor and Golden Beryl?

In other words, heliodor is sometimes called golden beryl, but "heliodor" in gemology is used when referring to beryl with a strict greenish-yellow colour.

In contrast, "golden beryl" is used on beryl stones with vivid yellow to gold colours. There have been further rejections from Walter Schumann, who claims heliodors are golden beryl, which is weak-coloured, rather than the stones being separate from beryl combined.

Does Heliodor Make a Good Jewelry Stone?

Heliodor stones occur in large sizes, which makes them suitable for carving. They make good cabbed and faceted jewellery. Heliodor's hardness on the Mohs scale is 7.5 to 8, making the stone an ideal product for producing excellent and valuable gemstones.

Unlike proustite and softer stones, heliodor produces many beautiful and long-lasting jewels that any wearer could be proud of and worry less about their safety.

Besides hardness, its striking sunny-looking colours make heliodor an absolute choice for gem cutters to make eye-catching jewels that almost every wearer could fall for. Everyone loves beautiful things!

Characteristics of Heliodor stones

Sometimes, the changes in the chemical composition of prismatic heliodor crystals make them develop etched edges. This effect results from the overpressure that occurs during the formation time of the crystals.

Green beryl is often mistaken for heliodors due to its striking resemblance. However, there is a lot more to it than just looks.

Cabbed heliodors have a unique effect known as chatoyancy or the "cat's eye" effect. This is one way you can differentiate heliodor stone from other beryl.

The stone is associated with the astrological sign of Leo, which means it has a lot of positive energy that would benefit many people.

Are There Synthetic Heliodors?

Synthetic heliodors are made using two methods: flux and hydrothermal. It is the very same method synthetic beryl is made from.

Can Heliodors Gems Be Treated or Enhanced?

An incident happened where greenish-yellow Ukrainian heliodors were turned into aquamarines through heating. These aquamarines claim higher prices than the usual heliodor.

Aquamarines can also be turned into heliodors by irradiation treatment. It is a vice-verser process that increases the value of the stones. Radiation of pale aquamarines can turn them into natural-looking heliodors. So yeah, they can be heat treated or even oiled for more different looks.

Where are Heliodors Found?

Heliodor stones are specifically found: in Brazil, Madagascar, Namibia, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. Good quality colours come from Maine and New Hampshire in the US.

Other heliodor gem-rich places are:

Afghanistan; Cambodia; China; Finland; India; Kenya; Malawi; Mozambique; Myanmar; Nigeria; South Africa; Sri Lanka; Tanzania; Zambia; Zimbabwe.
